However, instructors seem increasingly willing to help students learn how to learn. The problem of under prepared students in higher education is not going to fade away in the next few years. This volume of New Directions for College Learning Assistance begins with a general philosophy of academic support by Georgine Materniak and an overview of successful programs by vickie Sanders, Heath Lowry, and William Theimer. Because this series of sourcebooks is written with practitioners in mind, the remaining chapters deal with methods for enhancing student learning. The authors were asked to interpret their findings in a manner that would make them usable.</note>
