<note>Kant is undeniably one of the greatest philosophers of all time. his contribution to that part of philosophy which is concerned with the moral life has had a very wide influence. What did Kant mean by ‘the moral law’? How did he conceive of it as grounded in the consciences of men? Why did he think that its existence entitles us to believe in God, freedom and immortality? These are among the questions which this monograph answers. Kant’s writings on ethics are extensive and not easy to read, and have occasioned much philosophical study and criticism. Professor Acton skilfully organises a mass of material both from Kant and from his critics. He clearly expounds Kant’s leading ideas and indicates the philosophical problems which they have raised in the minds of other philosophers. He adds his own critical assessment of both Kant and his critics from a standpoint influenced by contemporary analytical philosophy.</note>
