Is There A Christian Philosophy?
From the very beginnings of Christianity, philosophers have debated the role of the Christian faith in a coherent philosophical system. This book surveys that debate together with the contributions of its leading participants and discusses the notion of a Christian philosophy as a perennial problem. Beginning with the philosophical elements in St John's Gospel and the writings of St Paul and the way in which contemporary pagan philosophers viewed Christianity, it goes on to discuss the Fathers up to St Augustine and their adaptation or rejection of non-Christian philosophies and Platonism in particular. A chapter is devoted to Scholasticism and how, after Aquinas, it gradually lost the notion of a Christian Philosophy. This is followed by a discussion of Christian elements in later philosophers, including Malebranche, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel and Kierkegaard, and an account of the great debate which took place in France during the 1930s in which leading Catholic philosophers, Gilson and Blondel among them, found themselves on opposite sides. Final chapters discuss nature and grace, whether a Christian philosophy can be universal, and reason as expressing the hidden presence or the summons of an absolute reality.
